I thought I should mention that we did also do a roadtrip to Salvation Mountain and Slab City from Palm Springs.
For any traveler finding themselves in Palm Springs and having half a day to spare, I would highly recommend including this drive to the Last Free Place on Earth.
Slab City is a former military base (hence the concrete slabs), and home to a community of transient... travelers. It's nothing like we've ever seen or experienced before, and would be the place I'd head to should the zombie apocalypse happen.
We'd recommend visiting the local 'library', the local 'pub' and also a very quirky collection of artwork at a place called 'East Jesus'. Address and directions not required - just follow the... 'path'.
Before you enter Slab City, you will chance upon a technicolored mound with a fair bit of writing on. This, my friend, is Salvation Mountain, and those scribbles you see in the distance are bible verses.
Because it rained so much, we are unable to actually enter or walk on Salvation Mountain's Yellow Brick Road, and had to be content with spectating from the periphery (slight bummer).
Still beautiful though; and obviously beautiful enough for this couple to be working what appears to be an engagement shoot.
